San Mamés

Sin reseñas aún

San Mamés is home to Athletic Club Bilbao and one of Europe's most loyal and vocal stands. Known as "The Cathedral", the modern version opened in 2013 on the ground of the original 1913 San Mamés. With 53,289 seats and an ETFE façade that lights up red and white, it preserves the essence of the Basque club's unique philosophy.

History and architecture

The original San Mamés opened in 1913 and was demolished in phases between 2013 and 2014 to make way for the new one, designed by ACXT-IDOM. Construction was carried out on part of the old plot while the team still played in the outgoing stadium — an unusual feat of sports engineering. The ETFE façade changes colour by event and was specially lit during Euro 2020 and the Copa del Rey final. It also hosts Spanish women's national team matches.

Iconic moments

The new San Mamés saw Athletic win the 2015 Supercopa — a 4-0 first-leg thrashing of Barcelona — and lift the 2024 Copa del Rey after 40 trophyless years. It has hosted Euro 2020 matches (Spain's group, round of 16), Copa de la Reina finals and Athletic Femenino games. It is also a regular venue for the Champions League draw and concerts by Bruce Springsteen and Guns N' Roses.

Getting there and matchday tips

Easiest access is Bilbao Metro line 1 (San Mamés station), exiting directly. Renfe (San Mamés station) and Euskotren tram also serve it. Neighbourhood car parks exist but fill up. Arrive 60 minutes early; Pozas and Alameda Rekalde bars hold the pre-match with pintxos and small beers. Family-friendly and welcoming to visiting fans.

Where to sit and what to eat

Grada Sur holds the loudest fans, with the anthem "Alirón" before every game. Grada Norte and lateral stands offer clean views with hospitality (Ipurua, Kubik). Suites San Mamés include Basque catering with pintxos, jamón and local wines. Concourse: tortilla and jamón sandwiches, gilda, Keler beer and Basque cider.
