Estadio Universitario

San Nicolás de los Garza, Mexico 42,000
Sin reseñas aún

Estadio Universitario — known as 'El Volcán' — is home to Tigres UANL in San Nicolás de los Garza, Nuevo León. Seating 42,000, it is one of the loudest and most feared stadiums in Mexican football. The Libres y Lokos supporters and a recent decade of Liga MX and CONCACAF Champions League dominance make it a mandatory stop for any Monterrey-area fan.

History and architecture

Opened on 30 May 1967, it is owned by the Universidad Autónoma de Nuevo León. Its crater-like shape (hence 'El Volcán') sinks the pitch below street level, producing enclosed acoustics that amplify every shout. It has been refurbished several times — notably for the 1986 World Cup and in 2015 — with upgraded seating, boxes and partial roofing.

Iconic moments

El Volcán has seen Tigres lift seven Liga MX titles, five Campeón de Campeones and the 2020 CONCACAF Champions League. The 2021 Club World Cup final (lost to Bayern) is another highlight. This is where André-Pierre Gignac became an eternal idol, and clásicos regios against Rayados are the most intense nights in northern Mexico.

Getting there and matchday tips

In Monterrey, Metro line L2 (Universidad station) is a 15-minute walk. Official parking exists inside the UANL campus. The area saturates from three hours before clásicos. Uber works well. Trompo tacos and grill houses along Ave. Universidad are must-do pre-match stops.

Where to sit and what to eat

Cabecera Sur holds Libres y Lokos, the loudest supporters — the best way to feel the 'Volcán earthquake'. Preferente offers the best all-round covered view. Refurbished VIP boxes include northern Mexican catering. Inside: carne asada tortas, trompo tacos, Tecate; around the ground, ice-cream parlours and classic taquerías abound.
