Madison Square Garden — 'The World's Most Famous Arena' — is home to the New York Knicks (NBA) and the New York Rangers (NHL) in the heart of Manhattan. Opened in its current form in 1968, it is the fourth iteration of the venue and one of the most important sports and music stages on the planet. Stepping onto the MSG floor is stepping into American sports history.

History and architecture

Designed by Charles Luckman on top of Penn Station, it is the only major U.S. arena built above an active train hub. It has been renovated several times — notably a $1 billion overhaul between 2011 and 2013 — with new seating, suspended 'Chase Bridges' walkways and hospitality areas. Its iconic circular shape and vaulted roof are unchanged since 1968. Capacity is 19,812 for NBA and 18,006 for NHL.

Iconic moments

MSG has hosted the Ali-Frazier 'Fight of the Century' (1971), Willis Reed's Game 7 entrance in the 1970 NBA Finals, Patrick Ewing's magic nights, Simon & Garfunkel's last song, Billy Joel's residency (150+ shows), the Rangers' 1994 Stanley Cup and countless landmark entertainment moments.

Getting there and matchday tips

Access is unbeatable: Penn Station is directly below, with NJ Transit, LIRR and Amtrak trains plus subway lines 1, 2, 3, A, C, E. Arrive 60 minutes early: TSA-style checks are strict. Large backpacks aren't allowed. Herald Square and Koreatown around the corner offer excellent dining.

Where to sit and what to eat

Courtside seats are among the most famous in world sport (at stratospheric prices). Lower Bowl 100 offers the best value-for-money view. The Chase Bridges provide a unique aerial angle over the floor. The refreshed food line-up features Hill Country BBQ, Pat LaFrieda burgers, Blue Ribbon sushi and Roberta's pizza. MSG Sphere Suites are the top tier.
