Fenway Park is the oldest Major League Baseball park in continuous use since 1912 and home to the Boston Red Sox. Located in Boston's Fenway-Kenmore neighbourhood, it is the smallest ballpark in MLB but also the most revered. The Green Monster — the 37-foot green wall in left field — is the most iconic feature in American baseball.

History and architecture

Opened on 20 April 1912 (a week after the Titanic sinking), it was designed with irregular dimensions dictated by its cramped urban plot in the Fenway. The Green Monster stands 37 feet tall just 310 feet from home plate. Other quirks: Pesky's Pole (right field) at only 302 feet, the deep centerfield triangle and the Green Monster's hand-operated scoreboard, still worked by two staff during every game. Current capacity: 37,755.

Iconic moments

Fenway has hosted Babe Ruth's Red Sox debut, Ted Williams' .406 season (1941), the home run that broke the Curse of the Bambino in 2004, and nine Red Sox World Series. It has also staged the NHL Winter Classic, Bruce Springsteen shows and even a Liverpool vs Celtic friendly.

Getting there and matchday tips

Access is by train: Green Line subway (Kenmore or Fenway stations) leaves you 5 minutes away. The Yawkey Commuter Rail station sits right across the street. Urban parking is very limited and pricey. Yawkey Way is closed to traffic on game days and fills with fans, hot dogs, Sam Adams and live music. Arrive 90 minutes before first pitch.

Where to sit and what to eat

Green Monster Seats on top of the wall are baseball's most iconic — expensive and waitlisted. Field Box sideline offers the closest angle to home plate. Right Field Roof is a solid pick with Boston skyline views. Fenway Franks, Yawkey Way sausages, Sam Adams draught and clam chowder are must-tries. The 'Sweet Caroline' singalong in the 8th inning is unmissable.
